I haven't really known what to say about all this. It may seem a trivial thing, the university you attend. For most people it is a means to an end, a place to get an education. Virginia Tech does that for its students, but it also nurtures young spirits and minds; is a place of fun and innocence, joy and security. Despite the ever growing numbers in attendance, Blacksburg is still a small town and Virginia Tech still has a very close knit community. When you meet another Hokie there is an instant brotherhood, a shared consciousness that pervades all who have lived there; Hokie Pride. It is much more than remembering the same bars or rooting for the same football team. For years of our lives Blacksburg was our home, Virginia Tech our family. It was the first place that we could be independent and assert ourselves as people. It was here that we all became the people we are today.

Though it has been a while since I have spent more than a weekend there, what I have seen over the last few days strengthens my belief that it is still there; this thing that is deeper and stronger than "school spirit" that ties all those who are Hokies. It is clear as a picture of the killer emerges that he was not one of us. He had no love for himself or others, much less this pervasive spirit that unites everyone who loves our Virginia Tech. Though we may not personally know anyone involved, I know Hokies all over the world feel as if their own family has been senselessly attacked. The healing process will be long but I have no doubt that through even this, we will perservere. Let's Go Hokies!

Dear Diary,

Camp was great! I made some new friends and got to know some old ones a bit better. I even got to meet someone who I have considered a friend for a while but had never met! It went, um, really well. I've never had a pen pal before; I sure am glad I wasn't disappointed!

It was nice to go to camp with all my friends from home since I am usually on my own at these things. Our skit was a big hit and they even had us do an encore (Jesus Saves, Jesus Saves, Jesus Saves!). Everyone's costumes were awesome; especially AARP in her Boy Scout uniform, Fill'Er Up's cowgirl, Quacky the Indian and Nurse Fire In The Hole. Camp activities were fun even though I missed out on the death march on Saturday 'cause I slept in. (Never leave camp!) This One Time did an especially interesting demonstration of "Friendly Fire(play)".

Camp romance abounded and there was only a smattering of pubescent drama. Mostly, people were awesomely reasonable and very cool about things. I did have my heart stomped on a bit by a boy I used to see around but I got over it. The only really bad thing that happened was that I lost my special camp vessel! It has my name on it and I told a counselor it was missing so I am hoping it will find its way back to me. Overall, it was an awesome time had by all.

Hugs and Kisses, Hokie

First, I have to say- Pee Wee's Playhouse, holy shit. They've started showing it on Adult Swim and I am no longer in doubt as to why I like so much totally skewed shit. I used to love that show and never missed it on Saturday morning. I don't know if it's sentimental value or what but it's still pretty damn entertaining. I wonder, if I had watched My Little Pony and the Care Bears instead of Pee Wee and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would I have more "normal" tastes today. Or did these shows create an entire mainstream culture of children who grew up to love this bizarro shit? I mean, have you seen Aqua Teen Hunger Force? I find it interesting that a kids' show from 20 years ago fits right in with all the very adult shows they make for us 25-30 somethings today.

Saturday was shopping for and then attending my good friend Shannon's baby shower. I generally like kids but I'm not usually one to get overly excited about babies. I am, however, looking forward to having this one around. She's 36 and had pretty much resigned herself to spinsterhood until she met her husband in Costa Rica just about two years ago. He'd only been here for two months when they sealed the deal and I know it means so much to her. She's going to love being a mom and I love to see her happy. Saturday night hubby and I went out for a nice anniversary dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant. It was also the place we had our rehearsal dinner. Yum. Seems funny that we're "official" one whole year now.

Sunday we spent all day until late helping our friends Beth and Gerard move. We had to empty out much of his house to make room for all her things so we basically moved two houses worth of stuff. Their story is pretty interesting. We were all friends in college and she married the guy she had been dating shortly after they graduated. Well, that didn't last but she and G had become good friends. We've all known that he's been in love with her for years and I guess she finally decided to try it out. About a month later they were engaged and now they're shacking up. It's really weird to see them "together" after us all being friends for so long. She and I weren't terribly close in school but have seen a good bit of each other lately since we live in the same town. It's very cute and a bit cheesy but our dogs love each other. I was totally surprised and touched when she asked me to be in the wedding.

Today it was back to work and a lazy night. Maria and the girls go back to Sicily in a few days :( so I am going to try to have dinner with them tomorrow. There's a double header hash Wednesday since it's also the full moon. Not sure if there are two trails or what but we'll see. I have been spoiled lately with hashes not being far from home but it looks like this one will be a bit of a drive. I think I am going to have fun plans for this weekend. Not sure exactly where I'll be but I know it will be a good time.

hehehe. This is his first set of pictures from my friend Ho who is on an extended vacation in Brazil to see his brother and dad's family. I really enjoyed them and thought you might too.

http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLandingSignin.jsp?Uc=zxyu7sx.ba77vx6p&Uy=-513x2t&Upost_signin=Slideshow.jsp%3Fmode%3Dfromshare&Ux=0

I might not be the hopeless romantic but I like the idea of this. I don't think people take enough time to think about the simple things that really make them happy.

- Concept (and some items) stolen from Eunuch.

I love:

Dancing my ass off and not caring if anyone's watching

Laughing until I hurt

My dog

Getting out of the tub and into a bed with crisp, freshly laundered sheets

Being on/near the water

The sound of rain on the tent when camping or on the roof when I'm in bed

A moon so bright you can see by it

Eating outside

A crisp ocean breeze

A night so clear you could count a million stars

Hearing my new favorite song on the radio or a random favorite I know no one else knows

Ending a fantastic night with the sunrise

A Tinto de Verano (or six) on a hot summer day

Jet noise

Going barefoot

Wicked lightening, or any thunderstorm in general

Sleeping naked

Wearing a man's clothes

The way candles can light up a room in a way that electric lights never can

The feel and smell after swimming in the ocean

The warmth of clothing just taken out of the dryer

Falling asleep in the sun on a cool Spring day

Watching the sunset, knowing a great night is ahead of us

Eating a lobster with my hands- barbaric, yes, I know but YUM!

The first day it's warm enough to open the windows

Sitting by a bonfire when it's just cold enough to snuggle

Having someone ask me a totally random question b/c they think I might know the answer, and knowing it

Shiggy

Losing power in the evening

The smell of coffee

Museums with things Columbus would think were old

Knowing I’m going home to someone that wants to see me and be with me

A fresh tomato sandwich and a big glass of milk

Dressing up for Halloween (or anything else, for that matter)

Curling up on a cold day with a blanket and hot drink, devouring a good book

A delicious shower after a hard day of work or play

Waking up to find out it snowed overnight, there are no marks on the snow, oh, and work is cancelled!

She-crab soup (from Chick's) and oyster crackers

Lying in bed with someone who is a perfect fit

Meeting new people and feeling like we've known each other forever

Seeing old friends or family after a long time and feeling like it was only yesterday

Beautiful women (sorry guys, I love you too but you're just not that good looking, in general)

Great conversation

Waking up without an alarm

Going to football games in Blacksburg when it's just cold enough to need my new sweatshirt

The mountains in the Fall

Pedicures

Knowing I have two parents who still love each other and love me.

Making out

A good glass of red wine opened in the company of friends or family

To know I just took a great photograph

Stumbling into something totally unexpected and incredible when I am in an unfamiliar place

that is. I hope the people I leave behind love me enough to write an obituary that fits me as well as I'm sure his does him. We're trying to go see the new Pirates movie this weekend. Anyone interested? I'm thinking matinee tomorrow. I haven't seen Superman yet, either so I could easily be convinced to go see that instead. The Wailers are going to be at Innsbrook Saturday night. I think we'll be able to swing the $10 a pop for tickets but I'm sure beers will be $4-5 a piece and that just hurts. Ok, so, Irish wake, movie or two and The Wailers, maybe it won't be that quiet after all.

I think I heard my friend Hedgy say that a hundred times this weekend. I have to agree.
See here for an explanation of hashing: http://www.half-mind.com/Hashing/who.htm
Went to a hash event just outside Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend. The NC/SC Interhash to be exact. There was much beer drinking, socializing, game playing, eating, drinking, nekkid swimming, and general debauchery to be had. Always a great bunch of folks, those hashers. They're the greatest. Honestly, they'd give you the shirts off their backs. It was probably a giveaway at some event, anyway ;)
There was a pub crawl Friday night. Always a good time. Especially when you and forty of your closest complete strangers get taken across state lines in the back of a U-Haul. Slightly more fun than it sounds but I wouldn't want to do it for long. Thank God the bars were close.
I met lots of new people, many of whom I would like to know better, and didn't meet several I would have liked to. I feel like for a long time, I have been somewhat of an outsider, a voyeur, of the hash. I can never completely commit myself to it like some do, but I always have the desire. The hash is an interesting entity. There's somewhat of an inner sanctum feel about some of the people. They have been there for just forever. Then again, anyone and everyone is welcome and made to feel welcome. Just don't be a dick. The social dynamic is really most unusual.
As I see it, we are like a self motivated, modern version of the cult of Dionysus. The Hash feeds on itself and its own energy. We celebrate good times, good friends, good trails, good food, cheap beer and healthy physical activity (of all varieties). Usually running, often otherwise.
This leads me to another aspect of our little "modern cult", the SEX. People get drunk and screw. It is a fact of life all over the world. We drink a lot. We talk and sing songs and tell jokes and make lewd insinuations about sex all the time. It's fun. It's dirty. And we love it.

I really don't know how the married people do it though. I guess it only works if they're both true hashers. Mine's not. Well, he might be but I don't really want him to. Don't get me wrong, I have had a good time with him there before but, generally, I'd rather him not be. I guess I feel like hashing is my guilty pleasure. Especially events like this. I am a person who, when drinking, tends to get overly, um, entertained by talking to people, really close. And sometimes attaching myself to them. He does not like to see this and I don't blame him. I am sure I wouldn't like to be on the other side. I am very not good at self control in these situations. (I often contemplate my exact motivations for continuing to put myself in them, but...that's another show.) The problem is that it's just so damn fun. Plus, at the hash you meet the most interesting people from all over and all walks of life. I find that terribly attractive. Some of them are even good looking. All of them have something that makes them fundamentally like you, they're hashers.

But alas, it's late and I am starting to fade. I have found that I just don't have the stamina I used to. I need to get into shape or hashing is going to kill me. One last thing, though. makaio14 didn't know where I was or what I did this weekend but somehow she pulled this out (how do they know?):

Leslie, see what happens when you get naked and make voodoo dolls? You get rabies. Bad bad girl. ;P

This was my response:
Holy shit, dude. I just got back from a debaucherous camping weekend! How did you know. I absolutely got naked and communed with nature. Good call. Plus, I almost hung myself from a tree trying to get out of the lake at who-knows-when in the morning. I sure hope I didn't get rabies, though. I hope my nasty sunburn will be punishment enough.

It's ALL the truth. On-Out, Hokie
